Real World Design Challenge

The Real World Design Challenge (RWDC), for students in 9th – 12th grade, is sponsored by a broad field of manufacturers, industry organizations, and educational organizations.  The program challenges the student teams to work on "real world" design and engineering problems.  The challenge last year was to design a wing configuration for a business jet.  This year's challenge was to design a tail configuration that was optimized for specific conditions.  The program is designed to give students an idea of what Engineering, Research &Development, and Manufacturing is like in the private sector.  It also challenges them to organize themselves with milestones and goals.

Similar to FIRST in many ways, RWDC tries to keep it REAL in the following ways: (http://www.realworlddesignchallenge.org/)

  • REAL PROBLEMS – Provides a practical application of classroom curriculum
  • REAL TOOLS – Inspires students by showing them what is at their fingertips
  • REAL ROLES – Requires teamwork, leaderships and problem solving skills
  • REAL DESIGNS - Fosters creativity, critical thinking, and innovation
  • REAL CONTRIBUTIONS – Students can make a difference

Although this was just the first time Lancer Robotics participated in RWDC, we placed 2nd for the State of Hawaii, out of 12 teams.  Our team consisted of just three members of the FRC team and one of the mentors, Mr. Bradford Quintal.  The first place winner was Iolani, with a team of seven gentlemen.  Iolani school was the national winner for last year.
