FIRST Robotics Competition

Six Weeks to Design, Build and Ship
According to FIRST, FRC has been called “the varsity sport for the mind”, and for some schools, FRC is the main sport sponsored by the school...not football or basketball.  High school teams are given 6 weeks from the January Kickoff Event, to design, build and ship their robot to their first regional competition.  The robot is required to move autonomously for an initial period, and then human “drivers” take over to score points for their team and for their alliance (red or blue).  Each year, the “game” or required tasks change for the robot.  This year’s game, Breakaway (Click here to see the Breakaway page) is similar to a soccer game, requiring the robot to have some kicking and blocking moves.

But it’s not about the robot!
Students, under the guidance of mentors from their school, the outside community and alumna college mentors, learn and increase their knowledge of science, technology, math and engineering (STEM), but also many non-academic skills.  Over the course of the six weeks, students improve their teamwork, communication (verbal, written and media), time management, and problem solving skills.  A successful FRC team will also have a Public Relations sub team which can brand and market the team so that the Finance sub team can raise the necessary funds to build the robot (and purchase t-shirts, buttons, and a banner for the team which increases the marketing and relationship/network potential in the community) so that the Web and Media team can acknowledge the sponsoring partners with the company logos on the team’s website.  The Support sub team will help make sure things are running smoothly by way of nourishment and other logistical necessities while the Safety sub team ensures that the bandage requirements are kept low.  With all of these sub teams busily working, it is prudent to remember one thing...the fans.  The Spirit sub team looks for ways to increase the potential fan base at the competitions.
