FIRST Lego League

What is the FIRST LEGO League (FLL)?

The FIRST Lego League (FLL) is for students who are 9 to 14 years old.  There is also a Junior level of the FIRST Lego League for students in the age group of 6 to 9 years old.  The goal of FLL and Jr. FLL is to introduce and get students involved in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).  More information about FLL can be found at this link

FLL and JrFLL has a set of core values similar to many school character values:  Friendly sportsmanship, Learning and community involvement or more to the point as FIRST prefers to states it “Gracious Professionalism”

Each year at the beginning of the school year FIRST announces a challenge to all the FLL teams.  Each year the challenge is different and unique from previous years so students, even those who have been previously involved in other FLL challenges, are constantly challenged to expand their knowledge and skills.  This year’s challenge dealt with Transforming Transportation and was called Smart Move.  For more information about Smart Move: http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/fll/smartmove1.aspx

The challenges consist of a research project on a contemporary issue, and a robotic task challenge.  The robotic task has a specific 4’x 8’ playfield with obstacles and tasks the robot needs to perform within a 2½ minute time limit.  From the announcement of that year’s research and robotic challenge the FLL teams have 8 weeks to complete their research, design and build a robot capable of performing the required tasks and then program the robot to complete the challenge autonomously.

Lancer Robotics Fields 2.5 FLL Teams

In its 3rd year of robotics the high school team competing in the FRC challenge again mentored the Junior High School team.  During the 2009 FLL challenge, Sacred Hearts Academy fielded two FLL teams, Team 4115 consisting of students in the 7th and 8th grades and Team 4116 comprised of students mainly from the 6th grade cohort. Lancer Robotics additionally sponsored an unofficial 4th grade team which submitted a presentation, but chose to compete yet with their robot.

The Lancer Robotics FLL teams are very grateful for their mentors who took the time to assist with the presentations, building and programming challenges.

  • Coordinator: Dr Carl Debo
  • Team 4115, Junior High: Steve Wheeler, Laura Dewan, and Ashok Kurian
  • Team 4116, 6th grade: James Bell and Melanie Ah Soon
  • 4th grade team: Lacey Castro
  • Student Mentors:  FRC Team 2437

Lancer Robotics hosts a District FLL Tournament

In November 2009, Lancer Robotics hosted the East Honolulu District A Tournament at Sacred Hearts Academy.  All participants received a certificate acknowledging their participation in this event. Six teams competing in this district tournament earned the right to advance to the Hawaii State championships:  Team 3180 Moanalua Elementary, Team 2716 Highlands Intermediate, Team 509 Laulima from Kaahumanu Elementary, Team 3185 Pauoa Elementary, Team 4115 Lancer Robotics Junior High, and Team 4116 Lancer Robotics Elementary (6th grade).
