Community Centered Services

Team 2437 Reaches out to the Community

Students involved in FIRST volunteer in their communities, (See Article), and Lancer Robotics team members are no different.

Team 2437 Reaches Out to the Community

It is especially the service-learning projects, completed annually by students that impact the larger community, perhaps the most. On an average, Academy students donate 50,000 hours a year to community service as they work in care homes and hospitals; with the handicapped and single-parent families; with the elderly; and tutoring public and private school students. Throughout the year, students and their families also contribute generously to the community through food drives, fundraisers, Aloha United Way, the Hawaii Food Bank and Loliana Hale, a homeless shelter for women and children.
Students also use skills learned in other classes for their roles on the FIRST team:  communications, problem solving and even theology.  As part of every theology class, students are required to complete a minimum of 25 hours of community service.  This year, members of Team 2437 have again completed over 3,000 hours, many directly related to robotics activities.  Team 2437 has a history of helping others where it can and providing support to the FIRST community.
Lancer Robotics participates in a variety of outreach programs to educate the community more about science, technology, engineering and math:

  • 2008; we demonstrated our robot to Kalani High School and encouraged them to participate in the F.I.R.S.T. program;
  • 2008, we participated in the Robotics Organizing Committee Kickoff at the state capitol, and a Safety Conference at the Hawaii Convention Center;
  • 2008-2009, Lancer Robotics participated at Lacy Veach Day of Discovery at Punahou;
  • 2008-2009,  Lancer Robotics attended the Armed Force Communication and Electronics Association Conference;
  • 2008-2009, Team 2437 mentored FLL teams, doubling the number of teams for the Academy. The Academy during this past Smart Move season had 2.5 teams (Team 4115, 4116, and an unofficial 4th grade team);
  • 2008-2009, hosted a FLL state qualifier tournament;
  • Summer 2009 Team 2437 also participated in the Military Appreciation Day at the Honolulu Zoo.
  • Summer 2009: Participated at the Open House at an all-girls’ after school program, Club Charm where we assisted the young children in building toothbrush robots;
  • 2008-2010, the Lancer Robotics has assisted with the Lego and VEX Robotics classes during summer school at Sacred Hearts Academy for students in grades 4-6;
  • 2008 - 2010, the engineering and robotics classes display their VEX robots and also held a workshop about LEGO robotics; the Academy’s Science Symposium for Girls, a S.T.E.M. workshop for middle school students.
  • 2009, we were invited to exhibit our robot at the First S.T.E.M. Day at the state capitol;
  • Spring 2009 and 2010, Basketball fans were invited to drive VEX robotics as the half-time show for the Senior Farewell night for Varsity Basketball.

Lancer Robotics not only does service for the community under the banner of Lancer Robotics, but as individual students and faculty members as well.  These are just some of this year’s programs in which they volunteered:

  • Domestic Violence Action Center bracelet making to raise funds for abused women and children
  • FAST for a better tomorrow to benefit the Waikiki Teen Health Center for Homeless Teens
  • Hawaii Special Olympics
  • Teaching technology classes for teachers
  • Hospitals and senior residence care facilities
  • After-school and summer programs for community elementary students
  • Sports camps for elementary students
